We’re more than just a dating site here at 98 Palms. We’re responsible for helping you find your path in life, not to merely have success with the opposite sex. Part of that instruction is a few core things that, we feel every man should know how to do.
This has been the debate at the core of all father/son or master/apprentice types of discussions that inadvertently come about when the subject of manhood arises.
The topic is one that has been hotly debated ever since the most primordial man learned how to conquer fire.
A big part of being a man is the ability to handle oneself in a wide variety of situations. It’s the confidence, braver, moxy, whatever you want to call it that sets the proverbial men apart from the boys.
When people think about their ideal of a man, he is someone who is confident and able to handle almost any situation thrown at him. It hearkens back to the fight or flight response that is so often talked about in scientific circles.
When we think about a man, we want him to be able to make the decision to fight when needed and be smart enough to evade if necessary.
We’re much more sophisticated today than when Ogg and his knuckle-dragging compadres walked the Earth. So, the skillset of a modern man is much more diverse than the hunting and gathering skills needed so many centuries ago.
So, what are these skills, you might ask? No need to wait, read on to see 10 important skills that every man should know how to do.
1. Give a Solid Handshake
People might think that the days of the handshake having importance is somewhere in our cultural rear view but they are mistaken. A solid handshake is still one of the cornerstones of how we separate the men from the boys.
You don’t want to be the guy with the cold, clammy, limp handshake when you are meeting a potential new client or your future father-in-law for the first time. A good, firm handshake is still the litmus test that shows you are a man of character.
2. Tie a Necktie
In today’s society it would seem that the need to tie a necktie is something that is fading from the cultural norms. However, just because it’s not as common in everyday life, doesn’t mean that it’s not something you should know how to do.
The most successful people still function at the suit and tie level and every man will still have weddings, funerals and graduations to attend at some point in his life, so the last thing you want to be is the guy who has to ask nana for help with his tie. Having some style sense goes a long way.
3. Build a Campfire
This is one of those skills that should be universal. However, if you find yourself stranded overnight somewhere or just out with your new love interest, it’s important that you know how to build a campfire.
Whether enjoying the sky in all it’s glory unencumbered by the city’s light pollution or as a means to cook that delicious trout you just fished out of the river, you will need to know how to build a quality campfire.
Once the trend of big, burly beards has gone the way of the man bun, it will be important that you know how to shave your face. We’re not talking about taking the electric razor / trimmers and leaving your face with the permanent 5 o’clock shadow.
No, we’re talking about a clean shaven, masculine face that every woman you meet would want to caress. Up the ante on this one and really separate yourself from the crowd by learning how to use a straight edge or fixed-blade razor just like your great grandpappy did back in the day.
5. Fix Things
Sure you can call the plumber or local contractor to help you with your home improvement project or when the garbage disposal needs to be replaced, but being able to take care of those things yourself is a true testimony to your manhood.
If you’re not comfortable with these tasks, there’s a wealth of useful videos online that will guide you step by step through the process. Plus, every guy likes shopping for tools.
6. Change a Flat Tire
You don’t want to be the guy on the side of the road who has to wait for AAA to show up just to fix a flat you could change yourself in 10 minutes. Plus, this skill is a great way to help that damsel in distress or just to stretch your good samaritan legs a bit with that elderly couple stranded out in the middle of nowhere.
7. Unhook a Bra
The clasps that keep the voluptuous goodness contained are fairly simple to navigate and a great sign that you are a confident and competent lover. You don’t want to ruin the mood by taking longer than needed to release the hooks on the back of a bra. Just push the straps together in the middle of her back and unhook. Simple, easy and you should be able to do it one-handed.
8. Iron Clothes
Odds are you are going to have clothes that need ironed from time to time. Unless you want to spend much of your free time taking your clothes to the cleaners, you need to learn how to iron. It’s fast, simple and easy.
9. Give Good Oral
We’re not talking about public speaking here (although that’s another good skill not on our list). Being able to sexually please a woman involves knowing your way around her naughty bits. A real man understands his woman is a sexual being who wants to be pleased and that’s a great way to ensure your lady is satisfied.
10. Be a Gentleman
Hearken back to medieval times and tap into your chivalrous side. Open doors, be polite, tip generously, defend yourself, talk to women the right way and learn the subtle nuances that separates the men from the gentlemen. Everyone can respect a true gentleman, so become that man that all women want and all men aspire to be.
There are many more that we could add to the list but these are ten of the most essential components to make you the best man possible.
